UPI frauds: ICICI Bank shares this important cricket lesson with customers
ICICI Bank has issued an important warning about fake UPI payment messages. The bank has shared the message via the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) along with a short video explaining the fake UPI payment scams and how to stay protected.
“If a caller pretends to overthrow -- A UPI payment; Don’t start running in a hurry,” mentions the video.
“It might be a trick to get you Run Out,” the video further adds.
Apart from this, the video advises users to “Just stay put and protect your wicket”, and “Don’t be in a hurry to return the money”, says the video.
Additionally, the post from ICICI Bank asks customers to remain vigilant about such scams and also provides insights on how scammers trick people into sending them more money than they receive by claiming that they accidentally transferred a large amount that they should have.
The warning comes at a time reports suggest a surge in digital payments fraud. According to the Reserve Bank of India's Annual Report for FY 2023-24, the number of digital payment frauds – which includes payments made through UPI – rose to 36,075 in FY 2023-24, compared to 9,046 frauds in 2022-23.
The bank has also asked users who have been a victim of cybercrime to report to the cybercrime support centre.

The tweet from ICICI Bank reads:

“Don’t let anyone trick you into leaving the crease and end up getting run out! BEWARE of callers claiming that they've made a UPI payment to you by mistake. CHECK the received amount carefully. For example, they might claim to have sent you Rs. 20,000 but in reality, might send only Rs. 200. The key here is the decimal which is strategically placed in the middle of the 5-digit number. REPORT fraud by calling 1930 or visit National Cybercrime at http://cybercrime.gov.in”.

How the fake UPI payment scam works
As mentioned by ICICI bank in the post, scammers trick customers into believing that they’ve accidentally transferred more amount compared to what they were supposed to and then ask the customers to transfer the extra amount they’ve mistakenly received.
Scammers contact potential victims, claiming they accidentally sent a large amount via UPI. They insist that the victim returns the money quickly by creating an ‘urgent’ need to not provide users the time to verify the received amount.
How to prevent fake UPI payment scam
ICICI, in its post, has asked customers to “check the received amount carefully”. The bank has also highlighted the added decimal in the middle of the 5-digit number which tricks the customers into believing that they’ve received the extra amount.
ICICI Bank has also advised customers to report such incidents by calling 1930 or visiting National Cybercrime at http://cybercrime.gov.in.
