BENGALURU: Bringing cheer to citizen groups and resident welfare associations, the Karnataka govt has decided to keep all 1,200 parks in Bengaluru open throughout the day, effective Wednesday. The parks will be open to the public from 5am to 10pm, according to deputy CM DK Shivakumar.
The only exception are two legacy parks - Cubbon Park and Lalbagh - which are under the horticulture department's control and will continue to remain open from 5am to 8pm.

Shivakumar said this decision to keep parks open is one of the many steps to make Bengaluru more inclusive. "This has been a long-pending demand of the citizen groups and citizens, and we felt the viewpoint is valid and has merits," Shivakumar, who is also the Bengaluru development minister, said. "Previously, all parks would be open between 5am and 10am, and from 4pm to 8pm in the second half of the day. But these timings had affected people who would just want to sit and relax during the day," the DCM said.

Shivakumar said Bengaluru has the highest park density in the country, with each ward having at least a park or two. “However, these parks were closed during the crucial afternoon time when citizens wanted to sit and relax, or youngsters wanted to have a peaceful meal.”
About security at the park in the evenings, Shivakumar said, “It’s our duty to ensure safety of citizens. Hence, police officials have been directed to carry out patrolling at regular intervals in these parks. Besides, we will deploy marshals to keep an eye on visitors.”
