‘Diarrhoea’ in Koraput village affects 36 in 2 days
Koraput: As many as 36 villagers have been affected from an alleged diarrhoea outbreak in Subai village in the district in the past two days after reportedly drinking contaminated water.
“A special health team is stationed at the village to treat the affected people. Required medicines and saline are being administered. The situation is under control,” said chief district medical and public health officer Sudhansu Kumar Giri.
He said the exact source of water contamination is still being probed.
Sources said the lone tube well in the villages has been sanitised as a precautionary measure. “There were no feasts or communal events in the village that could have contributed to the outbreak. Samples of water and rectal swabs from patients have been collected for testing to determine cause of the gastrointestinal illness,” said Giri.
He said recent heavy rainfall and the arrival of monsoon may have played a role in the diarrhoea outbreak. “Villagers have been advised against drinking water from polluted streams. All water bodies in the area will be purified to prevent further cases. The situation is being closely monitored,” said Giri.
