MOHALI: Unwilling to take no for an answer, a spurned suitor allegedly hacked a 31-year-old call centre employee to death in full public view at Phase V Mohali on Saturday as the latter refused to marry him after staying in a relationship for a few years. Later, when police went to arrest him, the accused assaulted a cop with his sword too, leaving him injured.
Police finally managed to arrest him with the help of passersby.
The murder was captured on CCTV cameras.

The victim, identified as Baljinder Kaur of Fatehpur Jattan village, Morinda, worked in a call centre at Phase V, Mohali. The accused, identified as Sukhchain Singh of Samrala, Ludhiana, has been working at a fuel station in Samrala, cops said.
Baljinder along with 4-5 other women going to her workplace on foot around 8.30am. Accused Sukhchain, who was already hiding behind a tree with his face covered with a handkerchief, took out a sword from his bag on noticing Baljinder and pounced on her. Baljinder tried to run away, but couldn’t go far as the accused chased her down, striking her with a sword repeatedly. Later, she fell down on the road and the accused kept hitting her till she became senseless, CCTV footage showed.

During this while, people did not try to save the woman. CCTV footage showed one scooterist stopping at the spot, but could not gather courage to intervene. Other motorists went past the spot when the accused was hitting the victim.
After killing the woman, the accused ran away brandishing a sword.
While searching for the accused in the area, cops nabbed the assailant around 11 am with the help of people present at the spot. When cornered, the accused allegedly attacked a cop with the sword, injuring the latter. The accused also received minor injuries while trying to escape and was admitted to a hospital.
Upon receiving information about the incident, Punjab Women's Commission chairperson Raj Lali Gill reached the hospital and met the victim's family. She also urged the police to take the strictest action against the accused to send a message to the society that there is place for such acts.
