FIR lodged after kin says wushu player died of drug overdose
PATIALA: Family of a wushu player who had become addicted to drugs has claimed that he had died of an overdose. An FIR was registered in connection with the death of Kulvir Singh (21) on Tuesday.
Kulvir had won several trophies. On April 15, he was found unconscious at a petrol station at Cheema in Sangrur district, with a syringe by his side. At a govt hospital in Sunam, he was dead on arrival. The SHO of Cheema said the body could not be identified until the family came looking for the missing player. Jarnail Singh, brother of Kulvir, said, “My younger brother had won several state and national medals.”
Kulvir’s mother, Malkeet Kaur, claimed to have reported the peddlers who had sold drugs to her son. Kulvir had even mortgaged his bike to buy drugs, she alleged.
Police started proceedings under Section 304 IPC (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) before adding murder charge to the FIR on the family’s intervention. “Kulvir Singh’s story is a poignant reminder of the devastating impact of drug addiction, overshadowing the bright future of even the most talented. He was a promising wushu player who had competed at the national-level,” said activist advocate Manpreet Singh.
