Patiala: Fed up with the apathetic attitude of the local administration and the Punjab govt towards overflowing sewage water on the streets — among other things such as basic amenities and sanitation — the residents of Sangrur have now knocked the doors of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
Maintaining that sanitation has remained unresolved even after 76 years of the independence despite its recognition by the United Nations as a human right, advocate Kamal Anand wrote in his letter to the NHRC, “Citizens of Sangrur are suffering as the city lacks basic amenities of proper drainage facilities and sewerage in most parts, with streets overflowing with sewage waste and human excreta from the toilets.”
“Sanitation as a human right was explicitly recognized as a distinct right by the UN.
We are forced to live in a hell-like situation due to negligence of the authorities,” the letter said.
