Tamil Nadu rain: Release of surplus water from Chembarambakkam and Red Hills reservoirs increased following heavy rainfall

CHENNAI: The Water Resources Department, as a precautionary measure, increased the release of surplus water from Chembarambakkam and Red Hills Reservoirs from 1,000 cubic feet of water per second (cusecs) to 6,000 cusecs and from Red Hills from 200 cusecs of water to 1,000 cusecs of water, respectively, on Thursday morning.

According to WRD officials, steady rain in the catchment areas of the reservoirs had increased the inflow of water into both reservoirs.On Wednesday, the inflow to the Chembarambakkam Reservoir was only 514 cusecs of water, which rose to 3,098 cusecs on Thursday. Similarly, in the Red Hills Reservoir, the inflow was relatively less on Wednesday, reaching 500 cusecs on Thursday morning. Following this, it was decided to release the surplus water, said the official.
Depending on the rainfall, the WRD will decide whether to increase the release of surplus water or to reduce it. Already, both Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur district administrations have requested those living along the water bodies in low-lying areas to move to safer places.
