The downpour on Wednesday might have spared Mudichur from water-logging in the southern suburbs. But parts of northern suburbs bore the brunt as excess water at the rate of 2,000 cusecs was released from Puzhal lake since Thursday morning.
Residents in the south and western suburbs were affected as smaller waterbodies in the locality overflowed due to the incessant rain.
According to the lake level report provided by Metrowater, Puzhal lake received 117 mm of rain on Wednesday.
The storage was more than 93% of the reservoir’s 3,300 mcft capacity. Due to this, water was released in a controlled manner since Thursday morning.
Theerthagiriyampattu, a locality bordering Puzhal lake, was affected as water entered houses in Sun City and Kumaran Nagar.
Other areas that suffered inundation due to the water release were Vilangadukuppam,Vadaperumbakkam and Samiyarmadam Ashok Modi of Puzhal said many houses in low lying areas are sub merged. “The service roads near the Central Prison are completely waterlogged and motorists skid and fall,” he explained.
Localities such as Medavakkam and Perumbakkam in the south, Chit lapakkam and Hasthinapuram in Tambaram corporation and Paruthipattu, Annanur and Kovilpathagai in Avadi corporation reported water-logging.
In Medavakkam, motorists had a tough time wading through the pothole-ridden stretches of VGP Babu Nagar that was inundated. Valluvar Nagar in Sithalapakkam was inundated due to overflow from a lake.
