PANAJI: Goa Forward Party president Vijai Sardesai met Union minister of health and family welfare Dr Mansukh Mandaviya at New Delhi and requested him to consider the idea of converting the existing South Goa district hospital into an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) facility.
Sardesai said that he is against the state government’s proposal to set up a private medical college at the South Goa district hospital.
Sardesai said that during the meeting with Mandaviya, he highlighted the advantages of having a facility like the AIIMS, including the economic and social impact it will have on South Goa.
“A South Goa-based AIIMS will offer wide-ranging, specialised medical services alongside the state-of-the-art medical infrastructure, not only significantly improving healthcare accessibility but also mitigating the need for residents to travel long distances for specialised medical treatments, and procedures,” Sardesai said.
He said that an AIIMS facility will retain talented healthcare professionals to remain in Goa and could also stimulate research, innovation, and the expansion of medical knowledge.
