Temperature fluctuates across state as monsoon intensifies
Panaji: Over the weekend, Goa experienced a departure from the usual temperatures by five degrees celsius marking a stark contrast to the scorching heat that prevailed just a week ago.
At 25.7 degrees celsius, the maximum temperature in Panaji witnessed a significant drop of five degrees from the 30 degrees celsius recorded at the onset of the monsoon last week.
Similarly, in Mormugao, temperatures plummeted to 26.2 degrees celsius, a departure of 4.7 degrees celsius from the norm.
The sudden decrease in temperatures has been attributed to the surge in rainfall on June 8 and 9, a phenomenon that left the state capital and townships inundated for hours. Heavy rains that prompted a red alert warning from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), marked the first active spell of the season.
On June 8, the state experienced its wettest day this season with rainfall of 95.1mm, followed by 63.6mm on June 9. This brought the total rainfall received by the state to 284.7mm, a remarkable 57.4% excess compared to the mean rainfall of 180.9mm, as of Monday morning.
However, the relief from the sweltering heat was short-lived as on June 10, the maximum temperature soared back up to 30.6 degrees celsius in Panaji.
IMD issued a warning indicating a possibility of reduced rainfall over Goa after June 12. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places across the state on June 10 and 11 with heavy rainfall likely to persist on June 12. Short, intense spells of rain, accompanied by winds gusting up to around 50kmph, are anticipated during this time.
