GUWAHATI: A police complaint has been filed in Imphal, accusing a UK-based computer science professor of Indian descent of allegedly provoking communities in
Manipur, which has been affected by ethnic violence, through his use of social media platforms.
The FIR against professor Uday Reddy of the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom (UK) was lodged at Imphal police station by a local resident.
His X handle @Kautilya33 has also been “withheld in response to a legal demand”.
In a statement on Monday, the Kuki Students’ Organisation-Delhi & NCR condemned the filing of “a frivolous complaint against professor Uday Reddy by an unknown complainant”.
The organisation stated that Reddy, through his X handle @Kautilya33, has consistently presented unbiased views and the authentic history of both the Kuki and Meitei communities of Manipur.
“It is clear that professor Reddy, an Indian-loving person of Indian origin with deep connections to India and its people, is being targeted for his commitment to truth and justice. The professor’s activism on social media has never been about vilifying the Meitei community. Rather, it has been about shedding light on the complex truths surrounding the Manipur violence,” the students’ body stated, demanding the “immediate withdrawal of the complaint and calling for an end to such unjust actions against individuals who seek to bring to light the historical and present-day realities of Manipur”.
