HYDERABAD: After years of neglect, the Kodangal constituency, represented by chief minister A Revanth Reddy, is about to get a spot on the railway map as the South Central Railways has started a feasibility study for a new railway line linking Vikarabad to Krishna in Narayanpet district.
The proposed line will provide rail connectivity to unconnected places, particularly in southern Telangana, and will link major towns like Kodangal, Parigi, Makthal and Narayanapet, among others.

The survey will assess the technical and economic viability of the project, taking into account factors such as terrain, land acquisition and potential ridership. Once the survey is completed and the project is approved, construction of the new railway line will begin.
Reduced tavel time to Goa
According to the railway officials, the proposed route is expected to significantly reduce the travel distance to Hubli and Goa.
The new line will provide a more direct and efficient link between these destinations, benefiting both passengers and freight.
“This development is a welcome change for the region, which has long been overlooked in terms of infrastructure development. The inclusion of Kodangal in the railway network is expected to bring economic growth and better connectivity to the constituency and surrounding areas,” said a senior railway official.

The project will streamline movement of goods, especially for the cement industry concentrated in Tandur.
₹2,196 crore project
The current route for trains from Secunderabad to Raichur in Karnataka is 193 km, passing through Vikarabad, Chittapur and Krishna.
However, the proposed Vikarabad-Krishna railway line will provide a more direct route from Vikarabad to Hubli, Kolhapur and Goa, significantly reducing the distance and time for passengers and freight travelling to these destinations.
The railway ministry last year gave the go-ahead for the final location survey (FLS) for the Vikarabad-Krishna railway line. This crucial line, estimated to be 122 km long, is expected to cost around ₹2,196 crore. Earlier, the railway ministry had sanctioned nearly 15 FLSs for new lines covering 2,647 km at an estimated cost of around₹50,848 crore.
