Manipur Floods
IMPHAL: Following the torrential rain caused by cyclone Remal in recent days, officials reported on Friday that the Raj Bhavan in Manipur has been affected by waterlogging. The heavy downpour has led to floods in the Imphal valley, resulting in the loss of three lives and impacting thousands of people.
Due to breaches in the embankments of the Imphal river at various locations, water has accumulated within the Raj Bhavan premises.
A senior official stated, "The situation at the Raj Bhavan has improved considerably compared to the last two days. The inundated areas will be cleared soon depending on the overall weather condition."
Ningombam Bupenda, the spokesperson for the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), shared images on X, remarking, "Raj Bhavan is getting submerged in flood. It is rarest to see Manipur Governor personally checking water level in the Raj Bhavan." He further emphasized the need for swift action to reduce the unprecedented flood levels in the Imphal area.
In response to Bupenda's post, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi on X, stating, "And the outgoing PM is deep in meditation". The Prime Minister began his meditation at the Vivekananda Rock Memorial in Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu, on the evening of May 30 and is expected to conclude it on the evening of June 1.
Awangbou Newmai, Manipur's Minister for Water Resources and Relief & Disaster Management, reported on Thursday evening that the floods have affected a total of 1,88,143 people in the state, with at least 24,265 houses damaged. In response to the severe flooding caused by breaches in river bank embankments, the government declared a two-day public holiday for all state offices until May 31.
