Miscreants torch Navodaya in Moreh, 4 houses in Jiribam
Imphal: Unidentified miscreants torched the newly constructed Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) building at Moreh sub-division in Tengnoupal district bordering Myanmar and four houses in Jiribam district on Wednesday night, police said.
Located close to an Assam Rifles (AR) camp at T Minou village between India-Myanmar border pillar nos. 75 and 76, the Vidyalaya, awaiting inauguration by the govt, was torched around 9pm.
A case has been registered in this regard with Moreh police station.
Official sources said the arson came at a time when the authorities are planning to set up a BSF camp on the premises of the Centre-run school as a security enhancement measure as Moreh has been embroiled by a string of incidents of violence since the ethnic conflict broke out on May 3 last year.
Meanwhile, three buildings, including a tea stall, located in Jiribam district’s Kalinagar ward no. 1, Longreijang and another house in the nearby Chingdong Leikai, were also torched by miscreants.
Bordering Assam, Jiribam has been on the boil after a farmer was abducted and killed by unidentified assailants on June 6. Since then, over 80 houses have been set ablaze in the district, forcing hundreds of affected villagers to take refuge in safer climes in the district about 202km from Imphal and neighboring Assam. The govt has deploy additional forces to keep the the situation there under control.
