NEW DELHI: In a major drug bust, security forces intercepted a heroin smuggling operation in Rajasthan's Anupgarh district on Saturday. The contraband, weighing 12 kg and valued at approximately Rs 60 crore, was being smuggled from Pakistan using drones, according to police reports.
The operation was carried out in two separate incidents in the Anupgarh and Sameja Kothi police station areas.
In the first incident, BSF jawans in 13 K village near Kailash post opened fire upon hearing the sound of a drone. During a joint search operation with the police, they discovered two packets containing 6 kg of heroin, estimated to be worth Rs 30 crore.
In the second incident, locals in the Sameja Kothi police station area alerted the police after hearing the sound of a drone. As the villagers and police team approached the spot where the smugglers had come to collect the consignment, the smugglers opened fire and fled the scene. A search of the area led to the recovery of two packets containing an additional 6 kg of heroin, also valued at Rs 30 crore.
Anupgarh Superintendent of Police Ramesh Morya acknowledged the frequent use of drones for smuggling narcotics from Pakistan. He announced plans to install an anti-drone system in the border area to track and neutralize drones used for such illegal activities.
