Jaipur: Chakka jam by truck operators hits supply of fruits, vegetables

Truck operators called a Chakka-Jaam in Jaipur against a new law to check hit-and-run incidents. This resulted in a severe shortage of vegetables and fruits at Muhana Mandi. Wholesale traders expect the shortage to continue, as the supply was only 25% of the usual amount. Fruit-laden trucks from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, and Himachal Pradesh were stranded due to the strike. Panic buying among retailers exhausted the vegetable stock, and if the strike continues, prices will rise.

JAIPUR: With the Chakka-Jaam called by the truck operators against the new law to check hit-and-run, the supply of vegetables and fruits was badly affected at the Muhana Mandi in Jaipur on Tuesday. Wholesale traders are expecting shortage of vegetables and fruits in the coming days due to the crunched supply which was merely 25% of what is actually received at the Mandi everyday.

No supply of fruits from the states like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh took place as the fruit-laden trucks were stranded on the way to Jaipur. Wholesale traders stated that due to panic buying among the retailers, the vegetables stock was exhausted by Tuesday afternoon.
“We have received merely 25% supply of the vegetables against our usual supply from Chommu, Bagru, Bassi, Dudu and nearby areas. If the strike continues, the supply of vegetables would be badly affected and prices will go up,” said Shiv Shankar Sharma, a wholesale trader of vegetables at Muhana Mandi.
Wholesalers dealing with fruits stated that they did not get supply from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir. “I have got some quantity of fruits which is pre-booked by my regular retailers. If the strike continues, my whole stock would get exhausted by Wednesday,” said Mahesh Hardasani, a trader at Muhana Mandi.
“The retailer who takes 20 kg of pomegranate per day was asking for 40 kg and those who take 3 to 5 kg of a particular vegetable asked for 6 to 10 kg,” said Abdul Sagir, another wholesale dealer of fruits at the Muhana Mandi.
