JAIPUR: The state Congress has drawn parallels between the Kanhaiya Lal murder case in Udaipur and the recent terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, where four members of a family were killed on Sunday. Congress leaders demanded that the state's BJP govt provide the same relief as the previous Ashok Gehlot govt did for Kanhaiya Lal's family.
The Congress leaders' demand came during public protests on Tuesday demanding adequate compensation for the families of the victims of the J&K terror attack.
Congress leaders argued that while BJP promotes the Hindutva agenda, it fails to follow through with their actions. They claimed that the compensation provided to the victims of the J&K terror attack was insufficient and not at par with the standard set by the previous Congress govt.
"The govt has promised Rs 50 lakh to the two families - not for each of the victims. Although the bereaved families were offered a contractual govt job and a dairy booth each by the administration and police officers to placate the agitators, no official announcement was made by the CM regarding the jobs and dairy booths," said Pratap Singh Khachariyawas, a former cabinet minister and senior Congress leader.
He said the BJP govt's announcement indicates its lack of intention to provide even contractual jobs. "In contrast, during the previous Congress govt, the family of Kanhaiya Lal, who fell victim in Udaipur, was given Rs 50 lakh, and his two children were given permanent govt jobs," Khachariyawas added. Lal was beheaded in Udaipur in June 2022.
Vikram Singh Shekhawat, a Congress leader from the Vidhyadhar Nagar assembly constituency, also compared the compensations. "These two incidents were terror attacks, and as such, the victims' families should receive equal compensation," said Vikram Singh.
BJP state secretary Bhupendra Saini, however, said there is no next of kin for one of the families. "A govt job for the other family is already under consideration and will be provided. The J&K victims have been compensated by both the Jammu and Kashmir govt and the Rajasthan govt. Congress is forgetting that for Kanhaiya Lal's family to receive compensation, BJP had to stage protests for weeks. They did not give it voluntarily," he said
State BJP spokesperson Laxmikant Bhardwaj also said that the state govt has already announced compensation and will provide every possible assistance. On Tuesday, CM Bhajan Lal Sharma announced an aid of Rs 50 lakh each for the two Jaipur families that lost four members in the Reasi terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday. The exceptional assistance was approved by relaxing the guidelines of the Chief Minister's Relief Fund.
