JNAC to set up sewage treatment plants along major drains in JSR
Jamshedpur: The Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) has announced plans to establish sewage treatment plants (STPs) along all major drains to prevent the discharge of untreated wastewater into the nearby Subernarekha and Kharkhai rivers.
Krishna Kumar, the deputy town commissioner (Dy TC) of Jamshedpur, said, “A specialised team would conduct a physical survey of all drains, both small and large, within the JNAC's jurisdiction.
The survey report will serve as the basis for initiating the process of awarding contracts for the construction of STPs.”

At present, there are 17 large drains in the JNAC's area that release over 10 million litres per day (MLD) of untreated water into the two rivers. Prior to the installation of the treatment plants, the JNAC will conduct door-to-door visits to encourage residents to refrain from disposing domestic waste in the drains.
“It is mandatory for the people living in the residential societies and colonies to dispose of the house waste in the garbage buckets being carried by the cleaning workers door to door daily,” Kumar added.
Moreover, the JNAC is forming an enforcement team to identify and address illegal dumping sites, referred to as garbage vulnerable points. The team will survey residential and commercial areas to locate these sites and develop strategies to halt the dumping of trash. Additionally, they will explore the possibility of transforming the illegal garbage sites into green spaces with the support of residents. The deputy town commissioner emphasized on the need for a dedicated surveillance team due to the increasing number of illegal dumping sites within the JNAC's jurisdiction.
