Jamshedpur: About 150 need-based
teachers of the Kolhan University have threatened to stage a symbolic begging if their pending salaries are not disbursed within the next seven days.
The teachers claimed that they have not received their wages since February this year, leading to severe financial hardships that have made it challenging for them to sustain their livelihoods.
Kanhaiya Barik, who teaches physics at Ghatshila Govt College, said: “The staff are in a dire condition. It has become difficult to even bear the transportation cost to reach college.”
The Jharkhand Rajya Vishwavidyalaya Samvida Shikshak Sangh (JRVSSS), the organisation representing the teachers, said the university has been assuring them of imminent payment for the past two months.
Rakesh Pandey, the president of the sangh, said, “Everyday teachers call me over phone and narrate their financial hardship. We have decided to beg to run our families till wages are paid. The higher-ups in the govt will become aware of our plight when we take to the streets to beg.”
KU registrar Rajendra Bharati said the delay in disbursing the wages was due to an ongoing investigation into alleged irregularities in the salary disbursement process for university employees.
“The other reason for the delay was that there were complaints about the fake documents of some of the staff. That apart, there were no funds available for disbursing the wages. The outstanding issues have been resolved and funds have been allocated. The teachers will get their pending salaries very soon,” Bharati claimed.
