Kanpur: Renowned archaeologist and Padmashree awardee KK Mohammad on Saturday visited the Merchant Chamber of Commerce and said, “ There is a need to modify the curriculum of Indian history so that our students can get proven knowledge of history in a fair and scientific manner”.
Mohammad KK was regional director (North) of Archaeological Survey of India and was a member of that squad which had excavated the eastern part of the Mosque (Babri Masjid) in 1976.
He had played a significant role in establishing that there was a temple at the Mosque site.
Sharing his experiences of that time, he said that there was sufficient evidence that under the mosque there was a grand temple. Excavation had two significant parts and as procedure our team inspected the remains available apparently over the ground . He claimed that his team had witnessed as many as 12 pillars which were raised from the remains of the temple. “Almost in all temples of 12th and 13th century, you would find “ Purna Kalash “ at the base . This is a Ghada ( Water pitcher) structure with leaves coming out of it. It is a symbol of prosperity in Hinduism and is known as the “AshtaMangala” which is one of the eight auspicious symbols”.
But the second excavation revealed more than 50 pillar bases in 17 rows. Excavations also revealed the base on which several pillars stood. This means that this structure was grand and large. There was a temple beneath the discovered structure and it was constructed in the 12th century AD.
Mohammad put together his entire presentation through a powerpoint consisting of numerous photographs (of remains of ancient statues found during excavations), interviews published in relevant newspapers, texts, etc.
