TOI Dialogues: Mohammad Kaif reflects on hostel life to cricket glory

NEW DELHI: In a fireside chat at the TOI Dialogue, former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif shared his personal journey, career insights, and thoughts on the evolving landscape of sports. The session, titled "Sporting Brilliance," provided a glimpse into Kaif’s upbringing in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, his experiences in cricket, and his aspirations for the next generation of athletes.
Reflecting on his formative years, Kaif recounted his time in a hostel in Kanpur."Hostel life was instrumental in shaping my discipline and resilience," he remarked. Kaif said the importance of hostel culture in fostering independence and camaraderie among young athletes. "Living in a hostel taught me to adapt, persevere, and build lasting friendships—qualities essential for anyone pursuing a career in sports."

Kaif's candid reflections on his academic performance revealed a pragmatic approach to balancing studies with sports. "I used to get passing marks," he said. Despite his modest academic achievements, Kaif’s focus on cricket never wavered. He underscored the importance of passion and commitment in pursuing one’s dreams, stating, "If you want to fight for your rights, you must first learn to win."

Kaif expressed his concerns about the growing obsession with gadgets among children today. "Today, kids are into gadgets," he noted, highlighting a significant shift from his own childhood, which was filled with outdoor activities and sports. He contrasted this with his son’s passion for football, which brings him joy and hope for the future. "I'm happy about his love for sports," Kaif shared, underscoring the value of physical activity in promoting a healthy and balanced lifestyle for young people.
Kaif’s illustrious cricketing career, including memorable moments like his match-winning knock in the NatWest Series final in 2002, provided rich anecdotes for the audience.
