Siliguri/Kalimpong: Around 2,000 tourists stranded in Sikkim's Lachung and Chungthang due to floods would be airlifted or evacuated by road once the weather improves, a senior official said on Friday.
"There is no major destruction in Lachung, Lachen and Chungthang. We have sent a requisition to the Air Force for helicopters. Once the weather improves, we would evacuate the tourists," Sikkim chief secretary Vijay Bhushan Pathak said.
Sikkim principal secretary of tourism and civil aviation, CS Rao, confirmed that the tourists were safe and had access to adequate food supply. There are around 1,200 domestic tourists along with 10 foreign tourists.
