SINGUR (HOOGHLY): Hooghly witnessed a high-profile contest on Monday as actor and game show host Rachna Banerjee of Trinamool faced off against her former tinsel town colleague, BJP's Locket Chatterjee. Both candidates toured extensively across Hooghly, though they never directly encountered each other. Despite the heated atmosphere, both refrained from personal attacks.
The most dramatic scene unfolded in front of TMC's Dhaniakhali MLA Asima Patra's house in Shibaichandipur.Chatterjee accused TMC of attempting to rig the vote, mockingly saying, "Everyone was in line. As soon as I stepped into Dhaniakhali, everything came out." She then shouted "Asima thief, Asima thief", to which TMC supporters retorted with "dacoit, dacoit, Locket the dacoit!"
Cops had a harrowing time creating a human barrier between supporters of the warring rivals. Neither side was willing to back down. Asima Patra said, "Realizing their defeat is certain, the BJP candidate is trying to create unrest."
Since the morning, Chatterjee was vocal with various allegations against TMC. She was seen removing "fake agents" and calling in central forces while moving from booth to booth.
Her opponent, Rachna Banerjee, during her visit to booths 269 and 273 at Shashibhushan Saha High School in Pandua, expressed displeasure over the inadequate lighting at the polling station. She stated, "The whole room is dark. Lighting has been requested, but it is not being provided. People won't even be able to read the names on the EVM." She advised voters to "vote carefully and calmly."
Barring these, the polling in Hooghly was one of the most
peaceful in recent history. The star candidates' movement resembled roadshows, with people lining the streets to catch a glimpse of them. Clad in a peacock blue sari, Rachna described the experience as a "great carnival of democracy."
For Locket, the was a "serious business, where the power of the people decides the fate of the country."
