Mumbai: 17% drop in 10th-day immersions as 5th-day visarjans saw 88% rise

MUMBAI: The city witnessed nearly 40,000 Ganpati immersions on Anant Chaturdashi-a 17% decline compared to last year's 47,965 immersions. BMC officials attributed the drop in 10-day visarjans to the 88% increase in immersions that took place on the fifth day of Ganeshotsav.
According to BMC data, there were 39,758 visarjans on Thursday-6,951 community Ganpati idols, 32,345 household Ganpati idols, and 462 Gauri idols-of which almost 30% were in artificial tanks.And among the 11,107 visarjans in artificial tanks were 740 sarvajanik Ganpati idols, 10,207 household idols and 160 Gauri idols.
In Navi Mumbai, 6,587 household idols and 499 sarvajanik idols were immersed in the 22 natural water bodies, and 1,555 visarjans were done in the 141 artificial tanks built by the civic body.
In Thane, 6,435 idols were immersed at various visarjan points, including 4,000-plus at artificial ponds and tanks.
