19-year-old dies after falling from Andheri flyover after hit by speeding vehicle
MUMBAI: A 19-year-old teenager named Vivek Yadav lost his life after falling from the Andheri flyover near Gundavali metro station in Mumbai. The flyover, which stands at a height of over 35 feet, was the scene of the accident when Vivek and his friend Aman Yadav, also 19, were knocked down by a speeding vehicle while they were out for a run. Aman, a second-year BMS student, survived the incident but suffered multiple fractures and head injuries.
He is currently undergoing treatment at Seven Hills Hospital and is set to undergo surgery.
The incident came to light when a group of cyclists noticed Aman lying on the bridge at around 6:12 am. However, there was no sign of Vivek, who had fallen from the flyover. "The team is trying to track the accused vehicle that knocked the two on the flyover. Both Yadav's reside in the same locality in Andheri (East) took the flyover while one of their friends ran below the bridge when the incident occurred. There is no closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera on the flyover. We are depending on the cameras on the stretch ahead to track the vehicle that was involved in the hit and run," said Assistant Commissioner of Police (Andheri Division) Dr Shashikant Bhosale.
Vivek was found lying below the bridge after approximately 30 minutes, having been thrown off the flyover by the impact of the collision. Amrit Rajkhowa, one of the cyclists who discovered the victims, along with five others, rushed them to the nearest hospital. However, due to the financial constraints of the families, they had to be transferred to another hospital. "They were unable to deposit even Rs10,000. The doctor even told Vivek's father that he will not survive and need urgent medical assistance. Despite of that, Vivek's father took him to Cooper hospital who passed away at 10.30 am," said Rajkhowa.
Rajkhowa pointed out that the absence of a barricade on the side wall of the flyover contributed to Vivek's fall. Additionally, the street lights were switched off at 5:45 am, which may have prevented the motorist from noticing the two runners. "Aman was found in shock, but conscious. He couldn't recall what had hit them. His left lower leg was swollen indicating multiple fractures. Vivek must have been lying there unattended for at least 15 to 20 minutes," he added.
Andheri police senior inspector Santaji Ghorpade said they have registered a case under the Indian Penal Code sections 279 (Rash driving), 304 (A) (Causing death due to negligence) and 338 (grievous hurt to any person by doing any act so rashly or negligently as to endanger human life) against an unknown person.
