Mysuru: Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Company (CESC) has recorded a 70% drop in fatal electrical accidents between 2022-23 and 2023-24.
According to data shared by CESC chief engineer Mahadevaswamy Prasanna, in the financial year 2022-23, the company recorded 211 cases of electrical accidents. It came down to 138 in the financial year 2023-24. The total number of accidents came down by 35% while fatal accidents came down by 79%.
In the same period, the death of animals due to electrocution came down by 40%.
Speaking at the awareness programme on electrical safety as part of National Electrical Safety Week organised in collaboration with department of electrical inspectorate at KEBEA Training Centre, Kadkola on Tuesday, he stated that this improvement underscores the importance of continued vigilance and adherence to safety protocols.
Educate public, create awareness on electrical safety : CESC MDSpeaking on the occasion CESC managing director G Sheela emphasised the need to necessitate enhanced public education on electrical safety. “It is crucial to educate and create awareness on electrical safety. As the demand for electricity continues to rise, it is important to adhere strictly to the legal framework outlined in the Electricity Act for cable laying and other essential electrical infrastructure. Lack of awareness about safety precautions could lead to unfortunate mishaps,” she observed.
The programme concluded with a call to linemen and field staff to rigorously follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) during all electrical operations and installations.
