Namakkal: Two truck drivers lost their lives after their trucks collided on the Coimbatore-Salem national highway near Kumarapalayam here on Monday.
The deceased have been identified as S Asruddin Shikh, 40, from Burdwan in West Bengal, and B Binu, 40, from Kannur in Kerala.
The accident took place when Binu was en route to Coimbatore from Sankari in Salem.
His truck was loaded with textile yarn. Around 8.30pm, when Binu neared Kumarapalayam bypass on the Salem-Coimbatore national highway, one of his front tyre burst, causing him to lose control of the vehicle.
An officer from the Kumarapalayam police station said, “The truck rammed the median and hurled over to the other side of the highway, where it collided with another truck which was plying from Coimbatore to Salem.” He added that both drivers were trapped in the wreckage and died on the spot.
Police retrieved the bodies and sent them to the government hospital in Kumarapalayam town for a postmortem.
A case has been registered and further probe is on.
