Trichy: A constable of Trichy city police was assaulted with a machete while pursuing three suspects involved in a mobile phone snatching incident near Kalaignar Arivalayam in Chathiram bus stand area in the early hours of Saturday.

The Fort police arrested two of the accused J Puli Saravanan alias Saravanan, 22, and P Sarathy, 19, from Srirangam. They were booked on charges of attempting to murder the constable. Saravanan already had cases registered against him.
The incident occurred when Kadhar, along with a team of more than five police officers, was conducting night patrol near the Chathiram bus station area and responded to an information from a passenger about mobile phone snatching by three suspects
As the police arrived at the scene, the three suspects attempted to flee, leading to a chase. They managed to apprehend the suspects in Annasalai area. Enraged, one of the suspects attacked Kadhar with a machete, causing him to collapse with injuries. He was immediately rushed to a private hospital for emergency treatment. The assailants then managed to escape from the scene.
Upon receiving information about the attack, senior police officials reached the spot and commenced an investigation. Police captured the two assailants. The third accused was said to be a juvenile. The two were being interrogated at an undisclosed location.
The assault on a constable has sent shockwaves through the Trichy city police.
A series of mobile phone and chain snatching incidents have been afflicting the city. During the midnight hours, buses arriving in Trichy from Coimbatore, Tirupur, and Karur districts drop passengers at the Kalaignar Arivalayam area instead of the Chathiram bus station. This forces passengers to walk about 500m to reach the bus station, a situation exploited by robbers and thieves targeting passengers for mobile phone and chain snatching.
