Trichy corporation takes over repair of Anbu Nagar subway

TRICHY: In a major relief for city residents, Trichy corporation has taken over the maintenance of the railway subway in Anbu Nagar near Crawford. The civic body has drafted a proposal to prevent water stagnation and to install high-power motor pumps to drain water during monsoon.
Officials said that Trichy railway division has formally asked the civic body to take over the maintenance of the subway.The subway is a crucial link for residents of Crawford, E Pudur and Anbu Nagar to travel between residential and commercial streets.
For most part of the year, water stagnates in the subway owing to groundwater seepage. Two-wheelers and autorickshaws plying children to nearby schools are among worst-affected as water stagnation makes the stretch slippery for road users.
Corporation sources said guniting, a technical process to arrest seepage, will be carried out shortly. “We will study the successful attempt in Melapudur subway where inundation of water was arrested. So far, maintenance of the Anbu Nagar subway was not handed over to us, which is why a solution was not initiated,” an official source said.
At present, stagnant water is being baled out using a motor pump, which is inadequate. The civic body has plans to obtain electricity connection to permanently place a high-power electricity motor to drain the water. A pump room near the subway will be utilised. Meanwhile, residents have sought for a solution for another subway near Bharathi Nagar below the Crawford RoB, which also has a similar issue.
