Gokak is an assembly constituency located in the Belagavi district of Karnataka. It is one of the 224 constituencies of the Karnataka legislative assembly and is part of the Chikkodi Lok Sabha constituency.

The constituency is situated on the banks of the Ghataprabha river. The constituency has a population of approximately 2.3 lakh people and is a mix of urban and rural areas.
In 2018, Congress’s Jarkiholi Ramesh Laxmanrao won the seat against BJP’s Ashok Ningayyaswami Pujari by a vote margin of around 15,000.
Laxmanrao has been representing the seat since 1999. However, he was one of several legislators who withdrew their support to the H.D. Kumaraswamy government in 2019. He won re-election from Gokak under the BJP ticket.
He was the Water Resources minister between 2020 and 2021. On 2 March 2021, charges were filed against Jarkiholi for sexually harassing a woman on the pretext of getting her a government job. Although he denied the charges, Jarkiholi resigned just before the budget session.
The Election Commission has announced that single-phase polls will be held in Karnataka on May 10. The results will be declared on May 13.
There are a total of 224 seats in Karnataka. It is the seventh largest legislative assembly by strength.
In the 2018 assembly polls, the state threw up a fractured mandate with BJP emerging as the single largest party with 104 seats. The Congress won 87 seats while the JD(S) won 30.
The BJP managed to form the government only after several MLAs from the ruling Congress-JD(S) coalition joined the saffron party.
The BJP faces anti-incumbency in a state where no party has won consecutive terms in over 20 years. The Congress is banking on BJP’s “incumbency burden” and is confident that the corruption charges against its opponent Basavaraj Bommai will stick.
