One of India's best known playwrights and actor and filmmaker
Girish Karnad is no more. He was suffering from illness from the past couple of years. At 81, he still was in the midst of the cultural scene, despite the ill-health.
Girish passed away early on Monday morning. The Jnanapith Awardee has been one of the most prominent literary voices among his generation.
While his film career began with the stalwarts of the
parallel cinema movement, Girish has also been part of some commercial potboilers in Bollywood and the South Indian industries, acting alongside stars like
Salman Khan,
Sudeep, Shivarajkumar and
Puneeth Rajkumar among others.
Girish's plays are still a favourite and his Odakalu Bimba/Bikhre Bimb/A Heap Of Broken Images is among the longest running plays in recent times, with actors like Arundhati Nag and
Shabana Azmi taking on the role of the protagonist.
