Are you thinking of bringing a furry friend? While it does sound like an exciting decision, pets are a big responsibility. It's important to be prepared before you welcome them home and they fill your life with all the love in the world.
Before You Adopt:
  • Consider Your Lifestyle: Do you have time for walks, playtime, and cleaning litter boxes? Some pets require more attention than others—research different breeds or species to find one that fits your lifestyle.
  • Think About Costs: Food, vet care, toys, and other supplies add up to the rest.
  • Choose Your Perfect Pet: Shelters and rescues are wonderful places to find companions. Purebred rescues also exist. Consider your living space and whether you're prepared for a high-energy dog or a more independent cat.
  • Pet-Proof Your Home: Chew toys, electrical cord covers, and hidden cleaning supplies can keep your pet safe. Scratching posts for cats and designated digging areas for rabbits are good ideas too.

Bringing Your Pet Home:
  • Stock up on food, water bowls, a collar and leash (for dogs), a bed, and appropriate toys.
  • Get a vet check-up to ensure your pet is healthy. Discuss vaccinations, spaying/neutering, and parasite prevention.
  • Feeding times, walks, and playtime should happen at consistent times each day to ensure security.
  • Teaching basic commands takes time, be patient and reinforce positive behaviour. Consult a trainer for help.
Keep in mind:
Pets crave interaction. Play, snuggle, and give them positive reinforcement.
Expose your pet to new people, animals, and environments as it can help prevent anxiety and behavioural problems. Always use a leash in public with dogs for safety, and provide a safe outdoor enclosure for smaller animals.
