NEW DELHI: Pat Cummins, the captain of the Australian Test and ODI teams, has committed to a four-year contract with the San Francisco Unicorns, a franchise participating in Major League Cricket (MLC). The announcement was made by the team on Tuesday.
Cummins, aged 31, is presently representing Australia in the T20 World Cup, which is being jointly hosted by the United States and the Caribbean.
The fast bowler will be joining a team that already features Matt Henry from New Zealand and Haris Rauf from Pakistan.
The second season of MLC is scheduled to commence in July, following the conclusion of the T20 World Cup. The league, which consists of six teams, had its inaugural season in 2023, with New York emerging as the champions.
"I'm very excited to join the Unicorns ahead of the 2024 season," said Cummins. "MLC is developing at a rapid rate, and the US market potential is huge for cricket."
Cummins mentioned that the ownership group of San Francisco, which consists of Anand Rajamaran and Venky Harinarayan, both entrepreneurs from Silicon Valley, was also a factor in his choice.
"While cricket is integral to my involvement, the global network and long-term possibilities offered by the owners specifically, and Silicon Valley more broadly, presented a unique opportunity for me and my life beyond cricket," Cummins said.
Cummins' entry into Major League Cricket follows the league's recent recognition by the International Cricket Council, the global governing body for the sport.
The ICC has granted "List A" status to the league, which signifies that records and statistics from Major League Cricket will now be included in the official T20 data.
