'Target is to win World Test Championship and Champions Trophy': Jay Shah says 'senior players will be there'

NEW DELHI: BCCI secretary Jay Shah has set ambitious goals for the Indian cricket team after their recent T20 World Cup victory. Shah emphasized the aim of winning the World Test Championship and the Champions Trophy, stressing the importance of a squad that includes experienced senior players.
"The way this team is progressing, our target is to win the World Test Championship final and Champions Trophy.There will be a similar squad playing there. The seniors will be there," Shah was quoted as saying by PTI.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who played crucial roles in the final against South Africa, announced their retirement from T20Is after the victory, along with all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. Shah praised their contributions.

"It was the same captain last year and here in Barbados," Shah said. "We won all games except the final in 2023 as Australia played better. This time we worked even harder and played better to win the title. If you look at other teams, experience counts. From Rohit to Virat, all excelled. Experience makes a lot of difference, in World Cups you can't experiment much also. A good player knows when to say goodbye to the game, we saw that yesterday. You look at Rohit's strike rate, it is better than a lot of young players."

The Indian team had developed a reputation for losing big finals over the past decade but ended their title drought after losing two ICC finals over the last 12 months. Shah expressed optimism about the team's future performance.
"I would want India to win all the titles," Shah said. "We have the biggest bench strength, and only three players from this team are going to Zimbabwe. We can field three teams if needed."
Shah addressed the transition following the retirement of these key players.
"Transition has already happened with three greats retiring," remarked Shah.
Their recent victory marks India's first ICC title win in 11 years, raising hopes for future successes with both seasoned veterans and emerging talents.
