A sudden downpour disrupted Kolkata Knight Riders' final practice session before their crucial IPL final showdown against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday. While SRH enjoyed a day off, KKR were slated for an evening practice under floodlights. However, just as the players began their customary warm-up football game, rain poured down, forcing them indoors. Despite the scramble for shelter, ground staff managed to cover the fourth strip designated for the final match.

The 2024 Indian Premier League season is down to its last two matches, both of which will be played at the MA Chidamabaram Stadium in Chennai, with Friday set to witness Qualifier 2 between the Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals in humid conditions. The winner of Qualifier 2 will meet Kolkata Knight Riders in the final on May 26.

Rising summer temperatures above 40°C in Tamil Nadu may be influenced by factors like El Niño, global warming, urbanization, wind conditions, westerlies, southwest monsoon, and the urban heat island effect, as per experts.

Chennai experienced rain and cloudy weather due to two large circulations of wind above the Bay of Bengal. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted moderate intensity rainfall for the next two days, along with issuing alerts for several districts. Day temperatures dropped below normal, and the rain belt is expected to move from east to west, resulting in rainfall in different regions of the state. The city and suburbs are likely to receive moderate rainfall for the next 48 hours.

Patients at the ESI hospital in Korattur had to return home as the hospital was flooded. The hospital premises, established around 50 years ago, is prone to flooding during heavy rains. This has been a recurring problem for the hospital located in East Avenue, TNHB Colony. The building is lower than the road, causing water stagnation. Despite temporary measures, a permanent solution has not been found. Patients and staff face difficulties in accessing the hospital and the presence of snakes is a concern. Nearby residents also struggle with inundation during the monsoon.

The downpour spared Mudichur from water-logging, but northern suburbs were affected as excess water was released from Puzhal lake. Theerthagiriyampattu, Vilangadukuppam, Vadaperumbakkam, and Samiyarmadam Ashok Modi reported water entering houses. Medavakkam, Perumbakkam, Chitlapakkam, and Hasthinapuram experienced water-logging. Paruthipattu, Annanur, and Kovilpathagai in Avadi corporation also suffered from inundation. In Medavakkam, VGP Babu Nagar was inundated due to overflow from a lake. Valluvar Nagar in Sithalapakkam was also affected.

The newly laid stormwater drains in Chennai, including those on the Inner Ring Road, were put to the test during heavy rains. Areas like Ekkattuthangal, Guindy, Arumbakkam, and parts of Velachery did not experience flooding thanks to the new drains. However, Arumbakkam faced minor inundation due to encroachments in the canal that obstructed the flow of water. The drains in Puzhuthivakkam, Madipakkam, and Velachery ensured that these areas were largely free from flooding. The functioning of the drains is dependent on the capacity of the canals into which the water flows.

Civic authorities focused on desilting stormwater drains and building new ones, but largely ignored the canals. This proved costly as floods were triggered in areas close to canals, such as Pulianthope, Kolathur, Jamalia, T Nagar, West Mambalam, parts of Kodambakam, and Teynampet. The failure to desilt and deepen the canals affected their capacity to drain flood water. It is high time the authorities found the original depth of rivers and deepened the canals.

Strong rain in Chennai caused traffic snarls.

Chennai and its suburbs experienced heavy rainfall and strong gusts on Saturday evening, with the intensity of rainfall expected to increase in the coming days. The IMD has forecasted light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning for the next two days. Bloggers predict a repeat of Saturday's rain spell on Sunday evening. Chennai has recorded above-normal rainfall since June 1, with the possibility of rain continuing until the end of September.

The city sizzled as temperatures crossed 40 degree mark and broke records for the second consecutive day as westerlies are strengthening ahead of the southwest monsoon arrival.

Meenambakkam observatory on Thursday recorded the highest temperature in the state, 40.8 degrees C, for the third time this month. This was two degrees above normal. Tiruttani also recorded 40.8 degrees C.

The city is likely to face several extreme weather events including unseasonal rain in the coming years, say researchers from Anna University who have found high variations in this year’s maximum, minimum and the diurnal (the difference between maximum and minimum temperature on the same day) in comparison to last decade’s average.

The day will be cloudy with thunderstorm and lightning in some areas of the city on Tuesday as a low pressure has formed in the Bay of Bengal.

The disappointement of last week when rain skipped core areas may be offset, with IMD forecasting thunderstorms with light to moderate rain at least for the next two days in the city and heavy rain over parts of southern and interior TN.

Carry an umbrella if you are stepping out in the evenings. Weathermen and bloggers have said rainfall may continue in the evening hours in the the city for a few more days. The intense thunderstorms that gathered over parts of the city and its suburbs on Sunday left 12mm of rain in Nungambakkam and 30mm in Meenambakkam.

People lined up in swimming pools, juice shops and free butter milk pandals to beat the heat on Thursday as the city recorded the hottest day with 38.1 deg C and 39.7 deg C in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam observatories.

Nearly 35mm of rain in an hour on Thursday afternoon brought the city to a halt. The rain may have reduced the temperature but it also triggered waterlogging, slowed down the traffic and led to a surge in cab prices.

Day temperatures may continue to be normal in the coming days and there are also chances of moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning in the city and the suburbs for at least the next 48 hours.

City residents have been waking up to hazy weather and poor visibility, but hours before the mist arrives, night temperatures have been dropping below normal.

Monday brought surprise showers that provided much needed respite from the searing heat in parts of the city. The absence of sea breeze on Sunday had kept day temperatures high well into the evening.

Bloggers said strong westerlies, or the monsoon winds may move over the city bringing thunderstorms in the evenings or at night.
