Sikkim flash floods: “Teesta River Dam not constructed in proper way…” State Forest Minister Karma Loday Bhutia

As a severe flash flood situation has been witnessed in the northeastern state of Sikkim, State Forest Minister Karma Loday Bhutia doubts the construction of the Teesta River dam in Chungthang. Karma Loday Bhutia said, “Our duty is to rescue the victims. The dam (Teesta River) was not constructed in a proper way.” Meanwhile, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) conducted search and rescue operations at Chungtham town near the Teesta hydropower project in Mangan district on October 08. As many as 56 civilians stranded due to the recent flash floods were rescued by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) in North Sikkim. Two teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), one team each at Rangpo in Pakyong district and at Singtam in Gangtok district, are also conducting search and rescue operations. Meanwhile, two more teams of NDRF have reached Chungthang and are carrying out search and rescue operations.
