Campaign website

Kim's campaign website stated the following:

"
  • Provide housing assistance for everyone that needs it

Currently, only one in six families that qualify for housing assistance actually receive it. New York’s waitlist for rental assistance is closed. That is unacceptable.

Housing should be accessible to everyone who needs it. It takes more than just money to do that, and we need to make sure we are spending resources carefully on programs that actually work. That’s why I want to build up the government’s best programs.

I will fight to expand the Section 8 housing voucher choice program, and tie it to proven services that help tenants move to high opportunity neighborhoods. I will work towards ending homelessness by replacing short-term shelters with evidence-backed, housing-first permanent supportive housing programs. And I will protect tenants and guarantee access to legal representation for them.

  • Increase public safety by interrupting violence before it happens

Violence threatens the core of what a city is. When people feel unsafe in public spaces, we can’t thrive. And with the recent rise in hate crimes, I know I don’t feel safe doing something as simple as riding the subway. That needs to change. Families deserve to feel safe, and the government has a responsibility to make that happen.

We need to change our approach to crime to be humane and prevent violence before it happens. We need to pursue sensible gun policies and get guns off the street, and stand up to the NRA. We need to invest in violence interrupters, which find the people most at risk of committing crime and get them the support they need, before crime happens. We need to improve access to mental health treatment, cognitive behavioral therapy, and crucial after school programs. We have to stop relying on law enforcement to solve every problem. and build up localities’ capacity to respond to crises with trained, crisis professionals, like New York's B-HEARD program.

  • Prevent the next pandemic

Even in the face of COVID-19, Congress is ignoring the threat of future pandemics. We saw what it did to New York. And with 900,000 Americans dead, we cannot let something like this happen again.

Experts say that we need to invest $75 billion into pandemic prevention to protect ourselves, but Congress only plans to spend $2 billion — leaving 97% of our needs unfunded.

I will fight for that funding to make sure we invest in vaccine technology, commit to free testing, improve manufacturing capacity, and increase the amount and accessibility of PPE. I will work with the executive branch to create an early pandemic warning system, and improve coordination between agencies and across countries so that we get crucial information before it gets out of hand. We must never experience a preventable tragedy like this again. [1]
