The South Carolina lieutenant gubernatorial election took place on November 4, 2014, following a primary election on June 10, 2014. Former Glenn McConnell (R) was first appointed in 2012 and was not running for re-election. Interim Lieutenant Governor John McGill took office after the primaries and was unable to run as a partisan candidate. The race to replace McGill featured Democratic candidate Bakari Sellers and Republican candidate Henry McMaster. McMaster won the election to a four-year term.
A primary election is an election in which registered voters select a candidate that they believe should be a political party's candidate for elected office to run in the general election. They are also used to choose convention delegates and party leaders. Primaries are state-level and local-level elections that take place prior to a general election. South Carolina utilizes an open primary system, in which registered voters do not have to be members of a party to vote in that party's primary. Voters must take an oath affirming that they have not voted in another party's primary.[1][2][3][4]

Race background
Resignation of Glenn McConnell
Former South Carolina Lieutenant Governor Glenn McConnell was hired by the College of Charleston as president and left office for the new position in June 2014.[15] Then-Senate President Pro Tempore, Republican state Sen. John Courson, would have normally been next in line but he expressed a desire to stay in the Senate instead. As such, a Democratic state senator, John McGill, was temporarily elected president pro tempore so that he could become interim lieutenant governor.
