This page lists and analyzes school shootings that have taken place in K-12 schools throughout the United States since 1990.

According to our research, 814 incidents have occurred during this time, resulting in 1,079 injuries and 524 fatalities. Additional information about school shootings by decade, by state, and by year is available below.

Methodology

This page is scheduled to be update monthly. It is also updated in response to new incidents that gain national media attention.

The incidents included here represent shootings and related firearm incidents that occurred at a K-12 school in a U.S. state or in Washington, DC. College and university shootings are not included. Suicides or suicide attempts where no other individuals were harmed are not included either. All incidents listed here involved either teachers, staff, students, minors, or law enforcement. Only incidents resulting in injuries or fatalities that occurred on school grounds during regular school hours (or during a school-sponsored activity) have been included.

Please note that this list of school shootings may not be comprehensive. It is compiled from incidents reported in the media and sent in by readers. If you know of incidents we are missing, please contact us.

School shootings by decade

  • 2020 - Present: 166 total incidents
Deadliest incident: Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. On May 24, 2022, an 18-year-old shot and killed 19 children and two teachers and injured at least a dozen more.
  • 2010 - 2019: 280 total incidents
Deadliest incident: Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. On December 14, 2012, a 20-year-old killed 20 children and six adults before taking his own life.
  • 2000 - 2009: 183 total incidents
Deadliest incident: Red Lake High School in Red Lake, Minnesota. On March 21, 2005, a 16-year-old shot and killed five fellow students, one teacher, and a security guard before killing himself.
  • 1990-1999: 184 total incidents
Deadliest incident: Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. On April 20, 1999, an 18-year-old and a 17-year-old shot and killed twelve students and one teacher at their high school, before killing themselves.
