Last Friday, the Formline team visited The University of British Columbia for an architectural tour of the Indian Residential School History & Dialogue Centre! Thank you to the amazing staff at IRSHDC for the warmest welcome. Alfred Waugh, FRAIC, the architect of this building, shared the story of the buildings design. Staff noted how there is a maintained connection to nature throughout the building, and on rainy days you can hear the rain running down the water feature created by the copper butterfly roof. The landscaping has now grown in, and we loved how the building was being recaptured by nature. The formline team is grateful for this unforgettable experience.

Copper was chosen for the roof at UBC’s Indian Residential History & Dialogue Centre, a material of cultural importance to Indigenous communities as a symbol of dignity and pride. The design further integrates copper by extending the roof’s fascia down to the ground, flanking the waterfall feature, which anchors the building to the earth. In collaboration with LGA Architectural Partners, we embarked on designing a building with ambitious objectives. One key requirement was a second-floor gathering space overlooking the ravine. “Initially I found this challenging, as I believe gathering spaces should be grounded, connected to the earth, and capable of seamlessly extending outdoors” – Alfred Waugh, Prime Consultant. We noticed a natural elevation difference between the street and the proposed gathering area, which inspired a solution: a ramp emerging from the landscape, spiraling around the building to the gathering space. This design allows anyone to ascend the ramp and enjoy the view, integrating the space with its surroundings. The building features two main gathering spaces: a large 2,000-square-foot area at the front and a smaller, multipurpose space at the back, anchoring the structure to the landscape. Our design for the Lake Country Indigenous Cultural Centre intends to celebrate the history of the Syilx Peoples of the Okanagan Indian Band and their relationship to the land. The program consists of two flexible cultural programmatic spaces including an exhibition hall featuring dividers for multipurpose use and an outdoor terrace. The exhibition hall will showcase the Okanagan Indian Band culture, architecture, and graphic representation of artifacts to the world, preserving their heritage and providing economic opportunities for future generations. Navigating the site’s landscape depression, we connected the main exhibit space of the existing library with the Indian Residential School History & Dialogue Centre through cascading exterior and interior staircases, creating a strong connection to the landscape. The building features a simple program of exhibit space and administrative offices, incorporating a butterfly roof to celebrate the significance of water reflected in the Musqueam, Salish, and Tsleil-Waututh people’s connection to the Salish Sea. The roof collects rainwater to a single point, which then drains into a waterfall feature creating an auditory experience along the glass. The feature alludes to the tears and suffering of residential school survivors while emphasizing the importance of water to this land. Wigwam structure: Render vs. IRL The University of Toronto Scarborough’s Indigenous House features two Wigwam-inspired structures that anchor the building. Between these arched forms, the Wigwam structures house a range of functions including elder’s rooms, meeting spaces, staff offices, a small library, a student lounge, and a kitchen, all within a compact 10,000-square-footprint. The architectural challenge was to integrate the distinct forms of the Wigwam structures into a cohesive design. We achieved this by enveloping the building in a single, cone-shaped roof. A ramp spirals around the building, connecting the ground level to the second-floor gathering space, creating a harmonious connection with the landscape.
