Denver Moves: Safe Streets

Bikeway Program

Expanding Denver's bikeway network is critical to achieving Denver's Vision Zero and Denver Moves Everyone's goals. By implementing bikeways, DOTI creates safer streets for everyone — building streets with slower speeds, safer intersections, better connections to transit, and safer conditions for drivers.

We currently offer residents and visitors 480 miles of on-street bikeways and off-street trails, and we have more new bike facilities ready for construction and in design!

Our Goals

Denver's Bicycle Program aims to provide people of all ages and abilities, and in all areas of the city, with a bicycle network that is safe, comfortable, and connected. Our goals are to provide people with healthier and more affordable travel choices that get them where they want to go.

Achieve Vision Zero

Denver Vision Zero logo

Bicyclists and pedestrians are heavily overrepresented in traffic fatalities in Denver, compared to how many trips people take using these modes. Streets with bikeways are safer for everyone - people walking, rolling, riding bikes, accessing transit and driving. Building a connected, safe bikeway network will help Denver to achieve our goal of zero traffic fatalities by the year 2030.

Create more equitable transportation options

Denver's transportation system is auto-oriented, and people with limited access to driving face transportation inequities every day. Building out Denver's bikeway network provides safer and more comfortable travel options for people who have less access to driving and rely more on walking, bicycling, rolling, and transit to get around Denver.

20% of all trips are done by walking and bicycling by 2050

Currently, about 6% of residents commute by bicycling or walking. Our goal is that by 2050, 20 percent of all trips are done by walking, bicycling, or micromobility device, which will help decrease congestion and air pollution from cars, and provide more Denverites with a convenient, affordable and healthy mode of travel.

Provide all households with easy access to a high comfort bikeway

Our goal is to build out the bikeway network so all residents are within a two minute ride (a quarter mile) of a bikeway they feel safe and comfortable riding.

59 percent of bicyclists are interested, but concerned

High-comfort bikeways include:

  • Trails and paths separated from vehicle traffic
  • Protected bicycle lanes with physical barriers such as curbs or posts
  • Neighborhood bikeways with design elements to slow traffic and prioritize bicycle and pedestrian travel
Comfort levels of on street bike lanes, low, to multi use trails, high

Our Plan

We're making an update!

Denver's community-developed, citywide bicycle master plan, known as Denver Moves: Bikes, outlines what types of bikeways our city will install — and where — to create a complete, connected, safe and comfortable bikeway system in Denver.

We're currently engaging the public in an update of Denver Moves: Bikes, charting a course for the installation and new bike lanes and upgrades to current facilities. Click below to engage with us on this effort and get involved.
