Current Research

I am a Forester in the Northern Research Station's Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program. My primary responsibilities involve providing data analysis and research assistance to the forest carbon estimation and reporting group. This program is responsible for reporting on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and removals in the forest land category as part of the United States' commitment to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

  Bridging the Gap: Unraveling Discrepancies between Remote Sensing and Forest Inventories

  Remote sensing has become a valuable tool for studying forest ecosystems and involves linking on-the-ground tree measurements with remotely sensed data from above the canopy. However, outliers can bring into question whether forest inventories like the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program and remote sensing are measuring the same things. Through a literature review and case study, scientists explored this question.

  Historically, the state forest inventories produced by the Forest Inventory and Analysis program every 5 years have been traditional station publications. Employees across the Northern Research Station have been creating digital state reports that include interactive data visualizations for engaging storytelling and customizable, sharable content for readers and users.

  How Much Carbon is in Tree Biomass?

  Forest managers, scientists, and policy makers have long assumed that 50 percent of wood biomass in trees is carbon. In the United States, where there are an estimated 1.4 trillion trees, even small deviations in wood carbon fractions can have big implications on estimates of forest carbon stocks and stock changes.

  Sure, we already knew that forest harvesting impacts on soil carbon in the Lake States were variable, but for the first time, we now know why, where, and what can be done about it.   Potential to Increase Carbon Sequestration with Tree Planting

  Almost one-third of Earth’s total land area is comprised of forest, which is also the largest terrestrial carbon sink. A Northern Research Station scientist and his partners have established that fully stocking the Nation’s understocked forests could increase carbon sequestration by about 20 percent.

  Better Estimates of Carbon Inventory in Dead Wood Now Available

  Researchers with the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program have sampled downed and dead woody material (DWM) since 2002 so most U.S. states now have a complete cycle of DWM data. As a result, for the first time, researchers used field measurements to obtain estimates of DWM biomass and carbon stocks for the FIA program's report and for DWM carbon estimates in the National Greenhouse Gas Inventory report.
