Maria Janowiak

Current Research

Maria Janowiak is the acting director of the USDA Northern Forests Climate Hub and of the Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science, two collaborative efforts led by the USDA Forest Service Northern Research Station. Maria has 15 years of experience in helping natural resource professionals understand and adapt to climate change, with particular emphasis on forest ecosystems in the Midwest and Northeast US. She has led multiple ecoregional vulnerability assessments, created decision-support tools, taught courses, supported the development of real-world adaptation projects, and provided direct outreach to thousands of people.

  NIACS received the first Climate Adaptation Leadership Award for Natural Resources in the federal agency category in 2016. The award recognizes innovative approaches to prevent changes that are affecting valuable wildlife and natural resources.

  Helping Trees Move: Elevating Assisted Migration to Routine Use in Forestry

  Providing Hands-on Training for Climate Change Adaptation

  Dedicated climate adaptation training can help natural resources practitioners integrate adaptation actions into their day-to-day work. In 2022, the Northern Research Station and Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science held two online courses focused on adaptation planning for wildlife and for carbon management. The training process is highlighted in a recent paper, along with the outcomes and lessons learned from 50 workshops over 8 years.

  Urban foresters can improve human health and address the climate crisis

  Urban forests can help communities adapt to and reduce the effects of climate change, but these forests are also vulnerable to changes in climate. Forest Service scientists and partners developed a menu of actions to adapt urban forests to climate change while also improving human health and well-being.
