UKAEA, as a part of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Collaboration (RAICo), co-hosted an event titled ‘Harnessing Robotics and AI for Challenging Environments’. The event was held at Energus, Cumbria, gathering almost 300 attendees and exhibitors from the region and across the UK to highlight opportunities to speed up deployment of technology in challenging environments. Attendees heard how embracing robotics and AI can help meet the two global challenges of climate change and energy security. Our CEO, Professor Sir Ian Chapman, shared his vision for the safe deployment of the latest technologies in his keynote speech. He also highlighted the transformative potential of robotics and AI. These technologies not only enhance safety by reducing human risk but also boost productivity and commercialisation efforts in both fission and fusion engineering. Registration is now open for the 22nd International Spherical Torus Workshop. ISTW 2024 will be hosted by UK Atomic Energy Authority at Rhodes House, Oxford, from 21st – 24th October 2024. The objectives of this workshop are to contribute to advancing the understanding of spherical tori (ST) configurations and to enhance their potential for fusion power applications. The scope of the meeting covers the full range of research activities on STs, extended to their interface with other compact toroid fusion concepts, namely, spheromaks and field reversed configurations, and aims to provide a forum for discussion and collaboration enhancement. For the first time in nearly 10 years MASCOT and the Remote Handling booms are in place in the Torus Hall to enable this summer's in-vessel projects - analysing the absorption of tritium and other elements into first wall tiles, and removing tiles and components for further study - which represent the first stage of JET's Decommissioning and Repurposing programme. Inspiration starts in the classroom, which is why UKAEA welcomed 27 teachers from across the country to Oxfordshire recently for the first of a new series of Teacher Conferences. Sessions included introductions to fusion science and technology, ideas for introducing fusion into classroom programmes, and a special behind-the-scenes tour of Culham Campus. Increasing our engagement with teachers and schools is a key priority for UKAEA as we strive to highlight the vast array of career opportunities within the fusion sector. By showcasing these exciting pathways to a wide and diverse audience of future scientists, engineers, project managers, technicians, and other professionals, we aim to inspire the next generation of talent for this pioneering industry. Learn about the groundbreaking applications of today's fusion technology. This talk was recorded at The Royal Institution on 3 May 2024, in collaboration with the UK Atomic Energy Authority. This, talk led by Professor Sir Ian Chapman (CEO of UKAEA) features leading experts in the field, each presenting unique perspectives on the opportunities, challenges, and breakthroughs in fusion technology. Michael Porton from Tokamak Energy and Ahmed Diallo of ARPA-E (U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy) explore next-generation tokamaks. Ahmed then discusses how the technology is currently funded and how we can drive the innovation and expertise needed in the field.
