Gareth Southgate resigns as England manager

Naga Munchetty penned an emotional tribute to England's former manager Gareth Southgate, who has stepped down following their defeat in the Euros 2024 final. He was appointed England manager in 2016 and England reached their first World Cup semi-final in 28 years in 2018 and the first major men's final in 55 years at Euro 2020 during his tenure.

The FA are now in the process of finding his successor. The news of Southgate's departure came two days after the Three Lions were edged out 2-1 by Spain in the final.

"It's time for change, and for a new chapter," the 53 year old said. He added playing and then managing his country "has been the honour of my life and meant everything to me".

The BBC Breakfast presenter, 49, shared her disappointment as she praised Southgate for the eight years he managed the men's squad.

She reacted to England's official announcement on X, which read: "After 102 games and almost eight years in charge, Gareth Southgate has announced he is to leave his role as manager of the #ThreeLions."

A second penned: "Well said!" While a third wrote: "Nicely put naga."

A fourth wrote: "Very disappointed that Gareth will not be in charge for the next World Cup. No cup wins but we were in the mix and were challenging towards the end of tournaments. Some people have short memories about the time before Gareth took charge Naga."

A fifth said: "I am gutted. I think it's the wrong decision. However, it's his choice, I hope he stays with the England setup, and he should be awarded with a knighthood."

Others disagreed as another tweeted: "Joy?! Southgate under England have been utterly tedious to watch. The players got us through via individual moments in spite of him."

A seventh added: "Can we just have a trophy next time."

Following Southgate's announcement others praised him for his tenure branding the ex-football manager a "legend" and called for him to receive a knighthood.
