Ben Miller, the original detective in Death in Paradise is returning to the BBC with a brand, new comedy from Australia.

Titled Austin, Miller plays the father of neurodivergent son who turns up unexpectedly.

Miller told fans: “An utter joy to be a part of this, alongside an incredible cast.”

A former comedian, Miller is also a co-creator on the project.

The comedy has already gone out in Australia.

The actor is still fondly remembered for playing DI Richard Poole in Death in Paradise, laying the groundwork for what would become a smash hit for the BBC.

Before that Miller, was one half of Armstrong & Miller of sketch comedy fame.

In Austin, he plays much-loved children’s author Julian Hartswood (Miller) who inadvertently causes a social media storm, and his career and that of his illustrator wife Ingrid (Sally Phillips) appears to be over.

Then Austin (Michael Theo), the neurodivergent son that Julian never knew existed, turns up out of the blue.

The comedy’s tagline is, “It’ll take more than a son’s DNA to save his cancelled father”.

The BBC has acquired Austin, a new eight-part scripted comedy series.

Sue Deeks, Head of BBC Programme Acquisition said: “Irresistibly charming, humorous and heart-warming, BBC viewers are sure to find Austin a sheer delight from start to finish”.

Catherine Nebauer, Head of Scripted at Northern Pictures said: “BBC is the perfect platform for Austin and we have no doubts its viewers will appreciate the clever blend of British and Australian humour.

“With a stellar cast and production team, Austin has already proven to be a hit on ABC with local audiences and we can’t wait to share it with the world.”
