REVOLUTIONIZING PATIENT CARE WITH AI: We are #BaptistProud to be the first health system in the country to embark on a new AI solution that improves care by streamlining the process for nurses to document important details about a patient’s condition and care plan. In collaboration with Microsoft, this innovative solution is voice-activated, eliminating the need for excessive and time-consuming manual documentation. This new technology is being tested at Baptist Medical Center South and will eventually roll out to the entire health system. Baptist Health has been designated an Antimicrobial Stewardship Center of Excellence by the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA). The award recognizes the health system’s commitment to advancing research in antimicrobial resistance and preventing the spread of drug-resistant infectious diseases within Jacksonville and beyond. As an Antimicrobial Stewardship Center of Excellence, Baptist Health is enhancing the health and well-being of the community by promoting the responsible use of antimicrobials to prevent the development and spread of drug-resistant infections that can cause severe illnesses. Advocating for the proper use of these medicines improves safety and outcomes by ensuring patients receive the most effective treatment for their particular illness. “We’re honored to be recognized as an Antimicrobial Stewardship Center of Excellence for our work to prevent the spread of drug-resistant infections,” said Shalika Katugaha, MD, FIDSA, FACP, medical director of Select Specialties, Infectious Disease Specialist at Baptist Health. “Antimicrobial resistance is one of the greatest global health threats. MORE TREATMENT OPTIONS! Individuals with head and neck cancers now have even more treatment options thanks to Baptist Health’s new single-port robotic system, which helps surgeons remove tumors in hard-to-reach areas like the throat without the need for open surgery. The robotic platform minimizes the impact to surrounding tissue, which can lead to improved outcomes and faster recovery times for patients. Using the single-port robotic system, surgeons can perform complex procedures through a natural opening (i.e. the mouth). From a single port designed to navigate small, narrow openings, three tiny arms containing a flexible camera and surgical instruments act as an extension of the surgeon’s hand. The surgeon guides the robot’s movements via a console, enabling a precise, minimally invasive option to treat certain head and neck cancers and offering patients the opportunity to avoid or lessen additional cancer treatments, including reducing the need for radiation and chemotherapy. “We’re seeing a lot more young people with throat cancer. Being able to offer them a minimally invasive surgical alternative is important to avoid the long-term effects of radiation to the head and neck,” said Faisal Ahmad, MD, section chief of head and neck surgical oncology at Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center. “Plus, time is a critical factor when it comes to oropharyngeal cancers because a 2 cm tumor can easily double in size in eight weeks. Having a robot specifically for these surgical procedures means we can act quickly and provide earlier interventions, which leads to better outcomes.” Read more about this new system here: go.baptistjax.com/3SHH4au
