As our Finance staff prepares the city's next biennial budget, meet Senior Financial Analyst Lindsey Ryan. Years worked for the city: 5. What made you choose Finance? I was always very good with numbers, and accounting was the easiest course in college, so it seemed like the class I should do most of. Applying dollars to ideas has always been very interesting to me. How do you work on the 2025-2026 draft budget? I’m meeting with all the departments to learn their vision for the next two years and get their budgets to accomplish their goals. The City Council will need to adopt the final budget in November. What goes on when working on the biennial budget? The revenue projections allow us to see what we have to work with moving forward. Personnel is our most significant expense. Also, with a budget, I get to get my hands in with what Parks is up to and what the Police are trying to accomplish. What else do you like about Finance? The fun part is working with other departments.  Fun fact: I purchased a boat before I purchased a home, which probably wasn’t the smartest thing to do, but I love water sports.

The Marysville Opera House is getting ready for its fall season and is in need of volunteer docents. Docents will provide administrative support and great customer service to guests attending concerts and shows, check event tickets and answer questions about the history of the building. We're so pleased to welcome Swedish cutting-edge maritime industry battery manufacturer Echandia to Marysville's Cascade Industrial Center! Mayor Jon Nehring and Gov. Jay Inslee were honored speakers yesterday at the company's grand opening of its expansion into the U.S. at this Marysville location. Joining the ribbon-cutting with Echandia CEO Fredrik Hellstrom and Board Chair Bjorn Gunnerholm were City Councilmembers Kelly Richards, Peter Condyles and Steve Muller. Echandia initially plans to employ 25 people in Marysville and expand in coming years with a focus on clean technology, high precision and laser applications. We appreciate Echandia's investment in Marysville and look forward to celebrating their success.

It's the first time this filtering technology has been used at this scale, meaning a relatively small site cleans stormwater for a large area of downtown. Yesterday we were delighted to officially open the Downtown Stormwater Treatment Plant on 1st Street west of Ebey Waterfront Park. Thanks to a $7.6 million grant from Washington State Department of Ecology, this new facility uses green technology to clean stormwater runoff from the downtown area, removing oils and other pollutants before the water drains into Ebey Slough. It will clean 110 million gallons of water every year and prevent more than 100,000 pounds of pollution from entering our waterways over the next 20 years! The Obstacle Overcomer Award, our third award from the 3rd annual Marysville Business Summit, honors a company that has faced one or more significant challenges by adopting a new business practice or strategy. Quil Ceda Leather started as Jansha Tannery in 1932. Despite her severe anxiety, Lacey Coragiulo began working there at age 19 with no experience in leather or business operations. She learned everything on the job by reading books and shadowing the then-owners. Lacey took over the business when the tannery was on the verge of closing, and expanded clientele by marketing to motorcycle groups, small businesses and events. The Historic Business Award, our second award from the 3rd annual Marysville Business Summit, honors a company that has successfully been in business in Marysville for more than 50 years. Oosterwyk’s Dutch Bakery has been a regional destination for pastries and baked goods for 70 years. The story of this family-owned business started in 1954 when Gerard Oosterwyk, a master baker from The Netherlands and palace bread baker for the Dutch royal family, moved with his family to Marysville. Today owner (and Gerard’s daughter) Marja Oosterwyk does her best to uphold her family’s legacy and traditions.
