As we reflect about how productive the summer was, we wanted to celebrate our interns, who supported key initiatives to move Coflux forward. On the business side, Grayson Maki joined us as a Business Development Intern, who made incredible impact during his time on the team! Grayson supported 100+ interviews and customer development opportunities, led a session on the EPA regulatory guidance for new PFAS technologies, created an in depth PFAS ecosystem map, and built our CRM from scratch. We will miss working with him as he returns to school in a few weeks and congratulate him on a great summer! We were also joined by our Undergraduate Research Assistant, Franchesca Sentmanat, who supported our team in the lab. Her work enabled key experiments and data gathering, delving into key peer research. We look forward to working with her through the school year and know she will continue to be an asset in technical development!

Coflux will be at a number of events this week, celebrating the first Houston Energy and Climate Startup Week! Excited to have the team at Activate’s Meet the Cohort, where our CEO Alec Ajnsztajn will be giving a short presentation. We will be representing just one team that was supported by TEX-E throughout the year at Greentown Labs From Schools to Startups series, where CTO Jeremy Daum will be pitching about Coflux (and the great Houston ecosystem that’s gotten us this far)! The team will also be attending a number of social events throughout the week as well! See you there!

We know the road to transitioning to alternatives will be long - and many #critical industries (#energy #semiconductors) use PFAS as a key input for infrastructure we use everyday. The EPA published this great infographic outlining the interconnected challenges we face as companies transition to PFAS alternatives, in the industries where we can transition. We are motivated by the opportunity to empower industrials to make better, smarter, and economic remediation choices, destroying PFAS from their wastewater!
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widely used, long-lasting chemicals, components of which break down very slowly over time. Studies have shown that PFAS exposure may be linked to harmful health effects. The effort to completely phase out PFAS will require broad collaboration and communication across many sectors, including researchers, regulators, and industry. Transitioning to PFAS-free alternatives requires careful evaluation to ensure that the substitutes do not pose new, unforeseen impacts to human health and the environment. In this Science Magazine Perspective, #EPAer Dr. Mohamed Ateia Ibrahim and ETH Zürich’s Dr. Martin Scheringer discuss the unique challenges related to transitioning to PFAS-free alternatives and propose a strategy to move forward ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/dzh9a38i

In addition to being used in household products and clothing, did you know that #PFAS are used in #hydrogen #electrolyzers? A report from Hydrogen Europe states that there is, "No alternative [is] foreseen to be able to substitute today or in the near future these highly specialised materials [fluoropolymers], central to the functioning of the hydrogen value chain." As we continue to strive towards the #energytransition, we know that #PFAS are a part of the conversation in creating renewable fuels, and we want to help hydrogen producers destroy PFAS effectively in their wastewater streams! The Coflux team is coming off of two weeks of learning, wins, and begins to delve into a summer of work! Last week, Dana Vazquez led the pitch at the Liu Idea Lab for Innovation & Entrepreneurship's Napier Rice Launch Challenge, securing the second place prize and the audience choice award! We are so incredibly grateful for the entrepreneurship community at Rice University that continues to provide great opportunities to share our technology with the world. Our other two co-founders, Alec Ajnsztajn and Jeremy Daum immediately got on a flight up to Boston, to compete as a finalist in the MIT Climate and Energy Prize - we loved hearing more about the incredible climate tech startups coming from universities across the country. This was Rice's first time being represented in the global finals! As the spring pitch season comes to a close, we are really excited for a summer of deep work and acceleration on Coflux!
