Shannon Olsen’s, RN, son Declan was two years old when a team of lifeguards saved him from drowning in a local pool. One of those lifeguards was Andrew Boelter. Olsen is the trauma program manager at M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital. Boelter is now a third-year medical student with the University of Minnesota Medical School doing his rotations at Masonic. The two reconnected, purely by chance, during a recent department meeting at the hospital when Shannon was sharing her story to fellow staff and residents. “I kind of put two and two together and I knew exactly where I recognized her from,” Boelter said.  The accident had a profound impact on both of them. It fueled Olsen’s passion for trauma education, particularly about water safety, and creating protocols to improve outcomes for trauma patients.   “I don’t think I would be in this role if that had not happened,” she said. For Boelter, it inspired him to pursue a career in emergency medicine. “It was a such a huge moment for me. I was dead set on medicine after that,” he said. he said. Olsen shares her story to both educate and inspire our emergency care teams who treat trauma patients everyday. “I always tell them they have an opportunity to make sure a child goes home to their family. They have the skills and they are part of a critical process that can keep a family whole.” #EmergencyMedicine | #MedStudent

Since 2019, the 3M Open has given over $1.9 million to support the breakthrough patient care and therapeutic programming we provide patients and families across M Health Fairview.   Earlier this week, we honored this tremendous partnership with a special celebration at M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital.  The event kicked-off with 3M Open volunteers packing LEGO kits for children and families staying in the hospital; a way to provide a meaningful activity for kids receiving treatment. Over the years, the donations have supported patient-centered programming at our children’s hospital, enhanced therapeutic spaces including the 3M Open Plaza, supported mental and behavioral health care, and driven initiatives that forward health equity in communities across Minnesota. None of this would be possible without the dedication and support of our community partners. On behalf of all our staff and leadership, we appreciate the contributions that help us improve the lives of our patients and their families. #GolfThatMatters | #3MOpen

Every minute, someone in the U.S. experiences sudden cardiac arrest outside of a hospital. Their chances of survival are less than 12%. ECMO, which stands for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, can dramatically improve a person’s chances of survival. M Health Fairview experts have long been leaders in the use of ECMO to save lives across Minnesota. Our new ECMO Intake Center at M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center will provide rapid, direct care for those experiencing cardiac arrest. The ECMO Intake Center is a pivotal addition to our ECMO Center of Excellence, which aims to advance emergency heart care and improve cardiac arrest survival rates across Minnesota. A grant from The Helmsley Charitable Trust supported the launch of the ECMO Center of Excellence. Learn more about the newly launched intake center: https://bit.ly/4fQixKc

Born with a rare genetic condition, 4-year-old Leland needed a new kidney. He got one at M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital – and in the process became the 2,001st child to receive an organ transplant in the history of M Health Fairview, which is home to one of the oldest and most distinguished transplant centers in the world. Now, Leland’s energy is as bright as his future. His care team supported Leland and his family through multiple hospitalizations and years of at-home dialysis. Becky, Leland’s mom, managed it all while helping him become healthy enough to receive a transplant. “People always ask how I handled it,” Becky said, “but it’s what I had to do. I had to save my baby boy.”  Read how historical expertise led to life-changing care for Leland and his family. ➡  https://bit.ly/4dEgZ4a

Dany Jerez and Varsana McRobert’s love story just got a little bit sweeter. First, the couple welcomed their son Oliver on July 9. Born six weeks premature, he needed extra support in M Health Fairview Southdale Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).  It was there, just a week after Oliver’s arrival, that the family experienced another special surprise. Dany proposed to Varsana – and she said yes! Their NICU care team joined in the celebration to surround the new parents with warmth and joy. They even helped Daniel decorate for the occasion!  “Their presence made the experience even more touching, especially since my own family couldn’t be there due to visiting restrictions,” Varsana said. “It felt as though, despite the circumstances, I was surrounded by a loving extended family, making the day more unforgettable.” Congratulations to the family! We are grateful to have been a part of so many special moments for them. ❤️

It’s been an exceptional week for community, golf, and lasting memories at the 3M Open.  First, six Fairview employees tested their skills against Bud Cauley during a “Beat the Pro” event. During the week of #GolfThatMatters, we provided comfort for families at the M Health Fairview Family Care Center and kept tournament goers safe with free sunscreen packets. Masonic Cancer Center, University of Minnesota experts provided 59 free skin cancer screenings on Saturday as part of our ongoing #SunSafety efforts.  We spread joy by giving away 265 #BornToBirdie onesies – one for every baby born at an M Health Fairview Birthplace during tournament week. And this year, we unveiled an interactive model of M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital, giving families a look at the kid-centered care we provide at the Twin Cities’ top-ranked children’s hospital and throughout M Health Fairview Pediatrics.  We’re grateful for our partners and the support of our community, which help us provide meaningful moments for patients, families, and staff! ⛳
